Trump condemns
The judiciary in Georgia had issued a 98-page indictment against the former president and 18 others, charging them with “extortion” and committing a number of crimes in an attempt to overturn the outcome of the 2020 presidential elections in this pivotal state that was won by Democrat Joe Biden.
After leaving prison, the former president stated, “What happened here is a judicial farce. We have not committed any wrongdoing. I have not committed any wrongdoing.” He added, “What they are doing is interfering in the elections.”
Trump had written in a post on his social media platform “Truth” before surrendering himself, “It is another sad day in America,” adding, “I am being persecuted because I had the courage to question rigged and stolen elections.”
Security measures were heightened before Trump’s arrival at the Fulton County prison, which is known to be unsafe, lacking in cleanliness, and infested with insects. It is subject to an investigation by the Department of Justice following the deaths of several inmates within its confines.
In previous statements, Trump affirmed that the charges against him in the four cases were “trivial, meaningless, and fabricated.” He accused President Biden of harnessing the powers of the Department of Justice to hinder his efforts to return to the White House.
Ten of the defendants in the case had previously surrendered themselves to the same prison, and they were all released on bail. The latest was former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, who posted a $100,000 bail and was released.
