“Hilary” marks the latest major climate disaster casting turmoil across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The island of Maui in Hawaii continues to grapple with the aftermath of wildfires that killed over 100 people and destroyed the historic town of Lahaina, making it the deadliest forest fire in the United States in over a century. Meanwhile, firefighters are still battling against the worst wildfire season in the country’s history.
On another note, a moderate earthquake struck a wide area of Southern California, hours after the tropical storm’s arrival.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale struck southeast of the mountainous community in Ojai, located about 130 kilometers southwest of downtown Los Angeles, according to the United States Geological Survey.
There have been no reports of major damage or injuries according to state officials. The earthquake was followed by several smaller aftershocks in intensity. The United States Tsunami Warning Center stated that there was no tsunami threat associated with the earthquake.
