Prior to making landfall in the United States from Mexico, Storm Hilary caused disruptions in air travel and sporting events. Officials urged residents to stay at home and keep emergency supplies readily available.
It is expected that Storm Hilary will bring heavy rainfall to various parts of the typically drought-prone southwestern United States.
It was expected that the storm would weaken as it continued its northward path through California and into the state of Nevada. However, the threats still remained. Richard Pasch, a hurricane specialist at the National Hurricane Center, stated that the storm was likely to become a post-tropical cyclone during periods of Monday, losing its well-defined center, but extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds were still likely.
The Los Angeles County educational district, the second-largest in the country, announced the closure of all schools on Monday, as did other counties across the region. Schools in San Diego postponed the first day of classes from Monday to Tuesday.
