Dr. Youssef El Azouzi, a Moroccan specialist in brain and nerve diseases, announced that he has registered a new invention: a first-of-its-kind device that filters blood from inside the blood vessels. He explained that the device, whose effectiveness has been scientifically proven, “can direct inflammatory cells or certain white blood cells,” which will help treat millions of people suffering from weakened immunity and aid in organ transplants “without fear of the new organ being rejected.”
El Azouzi wrote on his official Facebook page that this device “will, God willing, contribute to treating tens of millions of people who suffer from weakened immunity and chronic infections in intensive care units due to the ineffectiveness of antibiotics.” He also added that it “will help in organ transplant operations without fear of the new organ being rejected.”
The Moroccan doctor, who won the title of Best Inventor in the Arab World in the 11th edition of the “Stars of Science” competition in Qatar in 2019, explained that his company, Orto Medical, aims to invent a device for the prevention of chronic inflammation that leads to the rejection of new organs in the human body.
The inventor himself explained that “the mechanism of the invention involves redirecting the inflammatory cells circulating in the blood so that they do not reach the vessels that supply the new organs transplanted from animals, thus preventing their rejection,” as he put it.
The experiment conducted on the pig (weighing 75 kilograms) involved injecting both its right and left thighs to “induce inflammation, and then placing the device,” according to the Moroccan doctor. He explained that the role of the device was to redirect the cells causing inflammation to “only one side, where they would accumulate significantly compared to the other side; this was to demonstrate the device’s actual control over the pathways of white blood cells circulating in the blood.”
He added: “After taking samples from both legs before using the device, and then after it was activated, we should find that the veins of one leg show a decrease in the number of white blood cells”—which the scientific experiment later confirmed.
El Azouzi stated that by March 2025, the date of his journey to the United States, the device project had cost $250,000 in addition to the effort and time invested. He pointed out that “all these resources were provided by benefactors, and no public entity or institution contributed.”
