A stunning photograph of an orangutan reflected in the water has won first prize in the 2021 TTL Nature Photographer of the Year competition. The image by Canadian photographer Thomas Vijayan, dubbed The World is Upside Down, beat out 8,000 entries from around the world to win the first prize of £1,500. Will Nichols, founder of the TTLN Nature Photographer Prize, said “The photo that Thomas took is truly unique, and it immediately stood out to the jury.” “The unique perspective and composition means that you immediately try to discover exactly what you are looking for,” he added.
Vijayan took the photo on the Borneo island in Southeast Asia, where he chose a tree that was in the water so that he could get a good reflection of the sky and create an inverted effect.
Vijayan said : “This picture means a lot to me because the orangutan population is currently declining at an alarming rate,” .
