9 people, including at least one child, were shot in Newark, New Jersey, on Thursday night.
Raul Malaf, a spokesman for the Newark government, said that the injured were taken to two nearby hospitals, adding that they are all in stable condition and are treated for gunshot wounds.
No further details were immediately available about the incident, which occurred shortly after 6 p.m. local time (2200 GMT).
The repeated shootings have sparked widespread outrage in the United States, where a majority of the population supports tougher gun laws, but opposition from many lawmakers and Republican voters has long been an obstacle to passing major changes.
Hours earlier, local media reported, quoting police officials, that a 20-year-old woman who was pushing her baby stroller on a New York City street was shot in the head and killed.
NBC-4 reported that the victim was taken to the Metropolitan Hospital Center, where she died of her injuries, while the infant was not hurt.
ABC-7 said a gunman wearing black clothes shot the woman in the head after he approached her from behind, adding that her baby was not hurt.
The police did not arrest any suspects until the early hours of Thursday morning.
At a news conference near the scene in Manhattan, Eric Adams appealed to the mayor of New York to help catch the shooter.
“We will find the person accused of this horrific crime. We will find him and bring him to justice,” he said.
New York City Police said on Twitter that residents should avoid the area due to the investigation.
This incident came in a series of attacks, some seem random, in the streets and subway stations in New York, which raised a state of tension and anxiety among the residents.
